LPS popular is a semi-realistic-but-not-based-in-reality-at-all-really youtube series starring a large ensemble of high-schooler littlest pet shop toys. created entirely by sophie gtv, the series follows 16 year old dachshund savannah reed, her ex best friend brooklyn hayes, and their passionate rivalry, drama-filled antics, dubious schemes, all their ups and downs and everything inbetween concerning them, featuring their friends, romantic interests and enemies. love, lust, hurt, betrayal and pain, everything is shown for what it is in this overdramatic interpretation of high school life...and i love it

NOTE: i havent watched s2 yet because i just havent gotten around to it but ive watched most of the episodes of s1 twice. also i finished the unoffical remake but not s2 of that either

general thoughts - why i like it so much

i love this shit so much its like my ketamine. i dont watch a lot of tv or shows or anything cause my parents dont pay for subscription services or anything (we dont even use our tv really) so i think im the best and most experienced, unbiased person to tell yuo this is better than anything they have on there probabaly.

unlike most other fans, ive only discovered popular recently. i was browsing through a site on neocities and stumbled upon a possibly familiar face on their shrines page. it unlocked some sort of forgotten memory of all those lps videos (specifically set in a high school/school environment) i watched when i was a tiny tiny guy. under the impression i mightve watched it before, i decided to check it out. their shrine was uncompleted i guess cause it was just a link to the lps popular remake (by mlp fever) and i kinda just watched that. then literally after i finished the entire 2 hours of it i realized i had watched a remake, not the original. so i finally buckled down and started season 1

right of the bat, i fell in love with the shitty, low qualiy, overdramatic and sterotypical (but still immensely charming) characters/plot, and just the clear passion the series oozed. its so clear this is a passion project.

later down the line, it actually gets really good quality for some teen (im assuming) fucking around like. theres actually cool ass editing effects and an honestly banger intro with upgraded video quality and stuff. even just comparing ep 1 to ep 3 the jump in quality is so clear idfk how but ok. also this was started literally a decade ago so the fact it does actually still lowkey hold up is even more impressive

its also just so damn bingable. the plot is so drama filled and cliche but i love it for that. the characters are so themselves and theyre just being crazy all the damn time AAAAAA this is peak youtube content

problematic moments

while i love it, its also worth mentioning the weird parts about it. i know it was probably made by a teen literally years ago who just consumed the wrong type of content and/or wanted to make a story inspired by other girl teen dramas, which featured these problematic/touchy subjects, and it was literally started 13 years ago by now, but with the benefit of hindsight i think we should still talk about it

tl;dr: the way this show potrays ed is not the worst but its still wildly innapropriate to include such explicit examples of it and make it such an integral part of the plot of a RATED PG youtube series made with kids toys.

its something lots of people, especially women/girls (who make up the majority of the cast) struggle with due to sociatal expectations shaped by patriarhcal, misogynistic ideas that are constantly pushed and spread by the media. its for sure terrible sad that so many people have to deal with this but damn bro maybe dont add it as a major plot point in your rated PG youtube show that uses kid toys to act it out with scenes of brooke puking, sav refusing to eat food (starving herself), and brooke and sav having some sort of competition to see whos skinner. i dont really even know where to begin JAJJAJAJA

i dont know if sophie dealt with something like this before and thats why she added it in, but regardless, the decision is questionable either way. i appreciate how sophie didnt glorify it or anything, and media that talks about issues like this so openly is always nice, but why in a lps movie bruh!!!

i have a lot of things to say about brooke (shes objectively the worst) but starting off with the who fatshaming sav thing, jesus fucking christ. first of all, its so funny how "weiner dog" and "sausage" is used as a deogratory phrase.

appropriate additional context for anyone who doesnt know: popular, like a lot of other kids shows/series swaps out words in phrases and uses "animal" words to replace "human" ones (i.e. "oh my god" --> "oh my dog"). so i guess these would be replacements or synonyms for words like "fat" in this universe.

i guess such a really innapropriate subject matter in a [rated pg] show would obviously be ridiculous, especially in an animal high-school story, but this is just so stupid it becomes funny.

its just...so innapropriate to put it this bro!! if you watch it im sure youll get it. not like children shouldnt be taught about this, and luckily its not like popular glorifies it (while the shots of brooke puking and sav's angel and devil fighting hallucinations (angel is for...eating food and devil is for not) are bonkers as hell they still paint a picture of eds as not something good) children are stupid and just clear examples of such explicit fatshaming or moments of the main character, sav (the one people are supposed to relate to and feel for) wishing to be skinner, etc. is just ridicious and crazy and

whywhywhwhw why. im being redundant now. if you watch it youll know how weird it is. how these very real problems are being acted out by kids toys. i will stop here now bc youre here to have fun and not read a multiparagraph breakdown of problematic moments in a decade+ year old show, but whatever bro.

heres a list anyways compiling the moments, in somewhat sequencial/episodic order

  1. so many moments of both sav and brooke insulting each other or themselves about their weight
  2. sage asking sav if shes doing that "annoying starving thing girls do"
  3. sav having a dream where everyone calls her fat and ugly and then she wakes up and starts fucking excersizing till the morning
  4. sav getting sick from not eating and starts to see visions and shit
  5. tom "complimenting" sav (when hes tryna wife her up or whatever) telling her shes so thin hes surprised the wind hasnt blown her away (URK)
  6. brooke puking (with throwup sound effects and everything) because shes depressed sav is "skinner than her now"
  7. brookes mom calling brooke pudgy
  8. brooke seen essentially controlling the eating habits of her clique
  9. brooke has a "meltdown", starts hallucinating, and in the delusioned state eats a pile of chocolate cake and stuff

assault, non-consenting acts

ok second brooke problematic moment. it is a reoccuring theme where brooke just kisses sage without explicit consent, which im pretty sure is considered assault. her relationship with sage has never really been true love (which im honestly into cause..high school) so i guess this would be expected, and rocky relationships like this id appreciate its inclusion if it wasnt in a RATED PG TOY SERIES JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sage is seen giving less and less explicit consent, all the way up to brooke causing him and her to fall into a pile of chocolate (omfg i forgot about that that whole "brooke turns delusional for a minute and is about to binge eat" thing where he explicitly tells her to "stop doing that". still, she continues surprise kissing him and its just weird. and uncomfortable.
